TiO2 Project's new website and collaboration with Velferden

TiO2 Project has a new website with lots of exciting information about what they are doing, titanium white and their collaboration with Velferden !

The TiO2 project is a research project led by Marte Johnslien and Ingrid Halland. The project investigates titanium dioxide, the white pigment produced from the mineral ilmenite and extracted through mining in Sokndal.

“The purpose of the research project is to critically and visually examine the cultural and aesthetic assumptions of TiO₂ through art-based methods that unite artistic research with art history and theory.”

Ingrid Halland is an art and architectural historian, associate professor of aesthetics and culture at Aarhus University and associate professor II at the University of Bergen. She directs TiO2: How Norway Made the World Whiter (NorWhite).

Marte Johnslien , who is an artist and associate professor of ceramic art at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, leads the section called TiO2: The Materiality of White (MoW).

Velferden has collaborated with the TiO2 project on several occasions, including the exhibitions Hidden Stone and Kampanje! in 2024, the symposium "Extraction and Aesthetics: Pasts, Currents, Futures", and then Marte was one of Velferden's curated artists for COAST Contemporary which was held at Velferden in September 2025.
